Whether you’re a hardcore athlete or a morning stroller, maintaining muscles is essential to our well being.  The answer to maintaining muscles is protein intake but which type is better?  A new study says soy protein is just as good as casein protein for maintaining muscle mass.

Good news for all you vegans and vegetarians out there!

It was previously suggested that casein was more effective than soy at elevating the body protein levels; however, this study says otherwise.  The study involved 22 healthy 22 year olds randomly assigned to intake casein or soy meals.  At the end of the study, both groups showed the same muscle protein synthesis rates.  In other words, both soy and casein are just as good for muscle health.

Soy protein is a complete and nutritious protein containing all the essential amino acids the body requires for proper muscle synthesis, growth and a host of other bodily functions.  Soy has also been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.

If you’re looking for nutritious proteins to replenish your muscles after a workout, why not consider all your alternatives, especially ones that provide numerous health benefits.  Did I mention that soy protein helps with weight management and is way more environmentally friendly than diary proteins?  Just a thought.
