Today we talk about how protein can help with weight management. If you remember from my last blog post, obesity is becoming an epidemic in North America and has more than doubled since 1980. What can we do about it? Well, being mindful of our diets is a good start.

Obesity is growing into epidemic proportions worldwide, particularly in the North Americas. The prevalence of obesity increased significantly in both the United States and Canada, nearly doubling the estimates since 1980. A recent study revealed that obesity is significantly higher in U.S. adults than among their Canadian counterparts.
We’ve all heard of managing weight with low-carbohydrate diets, arguably popularized by Dr. Robert Atkins. What has come to be known as the Atkins Diet involves regular meals that are low in carbs and high in essential proteins and fats. What you may not realize is that a meat-based low-carb diet has greater health risks than a vegetable-based low-carb diet.
Just ask yourself, are you more aware of what you eat than let’s say, a year ago? The health and wellness trend is going strong and more and more you hear about what’s better to eat and what not to eat. So the results are in for 2010. What exactly are consumer attitudes about nutrition?
Still ignoring your eating choices and habits? Well the authorities are stepping in. Time to shape up.
Every five years, the dietary guidelines are jointly issued and updated by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS). They provide authoritative advice for people two years and older about how good dietary habits can promote health and wellness and reduce the risks of major chronic diseases.
