Canola proteins have high levels of sulphur-containing amino acids that are linked to many health benefits.

Rapeseed or canola contains a high proportion of essential proteins but to-date, canola plants have only been used for extracting canola oil and its canola meal by-product. Round seeds within the canola plants are removed and crushed to extract canola oil. After the oil is removed through processing at a canola crushing plant, the remainder of the seed becomes canola meal which, historically, has been used solely for animal nutrition due to its high protein content.

Burcon has successfully extracted and separated the two naturally occurring proteins in canola: napin and cruciferin.  Processing of these two fractions results in the cruciferin-rich canola protein isolate Puratein® and the napin-rich canola protein isolate Supertein™.  Both Puratein® and Supertein™are protein isolates rich in essential amino acids, suitable for human consumption.  Moreover, emerging research has indicated the high biological value of canola protein in human nutrition as a result of high levels of sulphur-containing amino acids: methionine and cysteine.
