Burcon has been granted 12 U.S. patents over its protein extraction technology and protein product uses.

Burcon has an additional 68 patents under review by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. These 68 patents can be grouped into three categories.

1. Applications to protect additional novel protein extraction and purification technologies.
2. Applications to protect the uses of Puratein®, Supertein™ and Clarisoy™: for example as functional food and beverage ingredients.
3. Applications to protect the "signature characteristics" of Puratein®, Supertein™ and Clarisoy™.

In addition to its U.S. patent applications, Burcon has applied to have most of its inventions protected internationally under the Patent Cooperation Treaty of the World Intellectual Property Organization. This would protect Burcon's intellectual property in some 35 countries, including the European Union, Japan, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
