Burcon has been granted 39 U.S. patents over its protein extraction technologies and protein product uses.
Burcon has an additional 82 patents under review by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. These 82 patents can be rouped into three categories:
- Applications to protect additional novel protein extraction and purification technologies.
- Applications to protect the uses of CLARISOY™, Peazazz™, Puratein® and Supertein™: for example, as functional food and beverage ingredients.
- Applications to protect the "signature characteristics" of CLARISOY™, Peazazz™, Puratein® and Supertein™.
In addition to its U.S. patent applications, Burcon has applied to have most of its inventions protected internationally under the Patent Cooperation Treaty of the World Intellectual Property Organization. This would protect Burcon's intellectual property in some 35 countries, including the European Union, Japan, China, India, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Burcon has in total 231 issued patents and 415 pending applications.
