Allan Yap, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Allan Yap, Burcon’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, has over twenty-four years experience in finance, investment and banking, and is a former Chairman of the Oxford Properties Group Inc., whose international assets in the management and development of commercial and residential real estate exceed $3 billion. Dr. Yap is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of China Enterprises Limited, an investment holding company active in the Peoples’ Republic of China, whose shares are traded on the OTC Bulletin Board in the United States. In addition to serving on the boards of several other public and private companies in North America, Dr. Yap is the Managing Director of Hanny Holdings Limited. The latter company, whose shares are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, was a co-owner of the Memorex® trademark until it was sold to Imation Corp. in April 2006. Dr. Yap is the Executive Director of Wing On Travel (Holdings) Limited, whose assets include the Rosedale hotel chain of Hong Kong and the Peoples’ Republic of China, and whose shares are also listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Dr. Yap is the Executive Chairman of PSC Corporation Limited (which distributes consumer products, packaging and health care), Intraco Limited (whose core businesses include commodities trading, semiconductors and info-communications) and Tat Seng Packaging Group Limited (a leading manufacturer of corrugated paper packaging products), all of which are publicly listed in Singapore. Dr. Yap is also the Chairman of MRI Holdings Limited, an investment holding company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. In addition to his business activities, Dr. Yap is a member of the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation Circle of Care. He was also the Honorary Chairman of the For Children We Care Dinner in 2001 and 2003. Dr. Yap received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Victoria in 2001 and is a life member of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. organization.
Johann F. Tergesen, MBA, CA, President and Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Tergesen is one of the founding shareholders of Burcon Capital Corp., which acquired B.M.W. Canola Inc., in October of 1999 and subsequently changed its name to Burcon NutraScience Corporation. Prior to his role as president and C.O.O. of Burcon NutraScience, Mr. Tergesen was vice president and treasurer of Burcon Properties Limited, a real estate development and ownership company with assets in excess of $3.0 billion. Mr. Tergesen has been with the Burcon group of companies since December of 1995. Prior to that, he was a manager in the corporate finance group of the Vancouver office of Coopers & Lybrand, Chartered Accountants. Mr. Tergesen holds a B.A. in economics from the University of Winnipeg and an M.B.A. from McGill University, and is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Dorothy Law, BComm, LLB, Director, Senior Vice President, Legal and Corporate Secretary
Ms. Law joined the Burcon group of companies in August 1997. Prior to this, she was an associate lawyer at the national law firm of Lang Michener Lawrence & Shaw, practicing primarily in the areas of securities and corporate law. She has served on the board of other public companies and currently is a director of China Enterprises Limited, whose shares are quoted on the OTC Bulletin Board. Ms. Law was admitted as a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in August 1996. She was also admitted as a solicitor in the High Court of Hong Kong in May 1999. Ms. Law holds bachelor of laws and bachelor of commerce degrees from the University of British Columbia.
Jade Cheng, MBA, CA, Chief Financial Officer
As a chartered accountant of over 15 years, Ms. Cheng has extensive public company reporting and financial management experience and has served as chief financial officer of Burcon NutraScience since 1998. From 1995 – 1998, Ms. Cheng held various senior financial management positions with Burcon International Developments Ltd. and Burcon Properties Limited, both publicly-listed real estate investment companies. Prior to joining the Burcon group of companies, she was an auditor at Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). Ms. Cheng is a member of the B.C. Institute of Chartered Accountants and holds both a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of British Columbia.
Randy Willardsen, M.Sc., Senior Vice President, Process
Mr. Willardsen has earned a reputation as a leader in the development and application of protein isolation technologies, with several of his innovations gaining widespread use throughout the food industry, including a unique microfiltration system for the production of whey protein isolates. Mr. Willardsen holds a master's degree in food science and nutrition from the University of Minnesota and has over twenty years' experience in the fields of membrane filtration and food, dairy and biotechnology processes.
As senior VP, process, Mr. Willardsen is responsible for process development at the Burcon Technical Centre in Winnipeg. He leads the process engineering team's efforts as they continue research and development of Burcon's protein extraction and purification technology, and carry out process enhancements, with a view to commercializing Puratein® and Supertein™ canola protein isolates and CLARISOY™ soy protein isolate while also broadening the application of the company's patented extraction process to other oilseed sources.
Martin Schweizer, PhD, Vice President, Technical Development
Dr. Schweizer joined Burcon in May of 2002 as a process-engineering specialist. He relocated from Nancy, France, where he earned his doctorate at the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine, with an emphasis on the enzymatic hydrolysis of rapeseed proteins. Prior to his Ph.D. work, Dr. Schweizer studied chemical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, where he specialized in food process engineering and water technology. Since January of 2003, Dr. Schweizer has overseen Burcon’s research and development efforts at its Winnipeg Technical Center.
Marina Mez, Director, Corporate Development
Ms. Mez brings 12 years of work experience in marketing, sales, research and analysis with investment banks JP Morgan and UBS in London and Frankfurt. As Associate Director & Deputy Head of the # 1 ranked European Corporate Access Team at UBS, Ms. Mez was responsible for corporate relationships with European blue chip companies, providing market intelligence and developing a comprehensive framework for UBS’ branded roadshow service. Most recently, she worked with Mackenzie Financial Services in Vancouver.
Ms. Mez holds a Bachelor in Logistics and Organization from the University of Ludwigshafen (Germany). In addition to her international business experience, she is fluent in English, German, Swiss German and French. Her energy and enthusiasm will be an asset to the Burcon team.
