For a long time in the shadow of soy as a plant protein source, pea protein is establishing itself in food and beverage applications, with the US market set to explode, say industry experts.

With an average annual growth of 5% in volume terms over the last three years, the plant-based protein market has to satisfy ever-increasing consumer demand,” said Bruno Gehin, corporate product manager – proteins for Roquette.

“The ability to meet this demand depends on new plant-derived sources delivering reliable, sustainable and affordable alternatives to animal proteins or soybeans. Consumers want products that are healthy and sustainable and that at the same time offer an attractive taste and texture.”

To meet this increasing demand, pea protein isolates are increasingly finding use in a range of food and beverage products, from nutritional bars to ready-to-drink beverages and powders, and from pastas to batters and breadings.

Clarisoy, the ‘invisible’ soy protein developed by Burcon NutraScience and commercialized by ADM, is attracting interest from “top-tier multinational companies to niche regional fruit juice companies” keen to add protein to everything from sport nutrition products to fruit/veg blends, says ADM.

ADM, which struck a global licensing deal with Burcon to produce, distribute and sell Clarisoy last March, can now supply commercial quantities after building a dedicated production plant for the novel ingredient at its soy protein facility in Decatur, Illinois.

The two options on offer are Clarisoy 100, which is 100% soluble in low pH beverages, and new variant Clarisoy 150, suitable for neutral pH applications such as soy milks and smoothies.

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM; Decatur, IL) says it will introduce the first line extension of its Clarisoy isolated soy protein line for beverages, at the upcoming Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Annual Meeting in Las Vegas in late July. Clarisoy is advertised as the world’s first vegetable-based protein that offers clarity and protein nutrition for beverage applications.

The newest addition, Clarisoy 150, is said to be a clean-tasting, isolated soy protein that is “specially processed for use in beverage systems with a pH of less than 4.0 with cloud systems or beverages neutralized to a pH of 7.0 of higher.”
